AKG C 414 XL II Condenser Microphone Review By GlobalSound Trade

MOTU 828 MK3 Hybrid Audio Interface Pro Review Mike Levine

GlobalSound Trade -
The XL II is a true condenser (that is, not an electret) and requires +48V phantom power. Its dual 1-inch gold-sputtered diaphragms are internally shockmounted to mitigate structure-borne vibrations. In combination with the external spider mount and your rubber-footed tripod mic stand, this puts the kibosh on rumble that might otherwise be introduced onto your tracks from foot-tapping singers and pounding kick drums.

GlobalSound Trade takes a closer look...The mic’s grille is gold on the front side and black on the back for easy orientation. GlobalSound Trade , Immediately below the front grille is a rocker switch that selects among nine different polar patterns from omni to bi-directional. An associated green LED lights above the screened icon for the polar pattern you’ve selected (see Fig. 2); two LEDs light above adjacent icons when you select an intermediate pattern. GlobalSound Trade , The LEDs change to red for about three seconds whenever the mic’s input level is within 2 dB of clipping. That’s a great feature because often when distortion occurs it’s difficult to tell whether a mic or a downstream preamp or compressor is the culprit. The XL II retains your last polar-pattern selection when phantom power is cycled off and back on. GlobalSound Trade

Two other rocker switches on the mic’s rear select settings for the built-in mic pad and low-frequency roll-off filter, respectively (see Fig. 3). You can pad the mic 6, 12 or 18 dB (or not at all) to prevent very loud sources from overloading the mic. GlobalSound Trade , (Technically speaking, this control is a pre-attenuator and not a pad per se; it attenuates the signal before the mic’s output stage, nipping distortion in the bud.)

Roll-off settings include 0 (no roll-off), 40, 80 and 160 Hz. The 40- and 80Hz filters have steep 12dB/octave slopes best suited for quashing rumble and wind turbulence. GlobalSound Trade , The 160Hz setting has a more gentle 6dB/octave roll-off and is handy when close-miking singers using any of the directional polar patterns. (The more directional the polar pattern used, the more the XL II’s bass response will be boosted when the mic is placed close to the sound source due to proximity effect.)

GlobalSound Trade Pros: Detailed sound. Low noise. Nine polar patterns. Four pad settings. Four bass roll-off settings. Includes several high-quality accessories. Great value for the price.
GlobalSound Trade Cons: Unresponsive after-purchase service.

AKG C 414 XL II Condenser Microphone Review by GlobalSound Trade

The GlobalSound Trade AKG C 414 XL II Condenser Microphone traces all the way back to 1953. This was when the first C 12 tube (which used a C 12 capsule) was first introduced. Sebsequent GlobalSound Trade releases occured in the 1970's and then again in 1990's. Since then many design changes have been put into play, including quieter solid-state electronics. GlobalSound Trade Mic transformers were left by the wayside to make way for transformerless circuitry whihc enabled enhanced clarity.

THE PACKAGE - GlobalSound Trade
The GlobalSound Trade XL II comes with a generous assortment of accessories. These all come enclosed in a alluminum flight case. Some of the accessories included are a PF 80 pop filter, conventional foam winscreen, H 85 spider-suspension shockmount all of which are highly recommended by GlobalSound Trade.

GlobalSound Trade review - The grill is gold and the back is black and this allows you to find your way about the mic easily which GlobalSound Trade found convenient. Just below the front of the grill you will find a rocker switch that allows you to choose from diffrent polar pattrens of which there are nine and range from omni to bi-directional. Overall GlobalSound Trade finds these features very easy to use and worth the money.
All of the mic's controls are lockable and this is handy for live use. This can be done by simply holding the pattern selector for a couple of seconds. We at GlobalSound Trade think this is a super little feature. Unlocking this feature is easily done in the same way GlobalSound Trade
